Style in the Mile High - time to slay the gladiator!

Diana Glaizer & Samantha Richardson have had enough of the gladiator sandal trend, and think it's time to bring on the 70's trends!  Groovy.

Samantha: So Diana, we started this column last April talking about gladiator sandals, remember that?  I can't believe they are still so in this year, I just don't understand why.  Please explain.

Diana: Ahhh, gladiators ... would you like my opinion or would you like my opinion on everyone else's opinion?

Samantha: Let's hear them both!

Site Map Diana: Ok, well my opinion is that it's a trend that needs to go back to the to the time that gladiators roamed the earth. To a time when shoe innovation was at its most primitive, where two pieces of leather overlapping one big piece of leather was a modern miracle. Perhaps the general consensus is that they are comfortable, and as long as they are comfortable, forget the style. Especially now, they all come in so many different styles, that heals almost seem like a thing of the past. Yes, I plead guilty to picking a flat soled shoe over my daily 5 inch heels, but is there really such a lack of shoe creativity that we can't create a flat soled shoe that looks decent?

Samantha: I'll speak for all the large-ankled ladies of this century when I say that gladiators are just about the most unflattering shoe for us. Other trends from the Ancient Romans don't repeat themselves like this shoe style does, like the toga. I would rather wear a toga than those shoes.  So now that we've banished gladiators back to the Stone Age, what's out there catching your eye style wise this week?

Diana: Before I get back to our trend watch, let me just tell you that it's not only the thick-ankled ladies that have a hard time with gladiators, it's also the thin ankle ones as well, and you know exactly who you are, and you know exactly why you regret buying those Steve Madden. So with that said, one trend I'm loving for spring are relaxed fit pants. I am not talking about oversized jeans, I'm talking about a comfortable pair of pants. These pants are relaxed fit around the hips, but then taper off as they end at the ankle.

Samantha: Sounds like a good alternative to the skinny jean.  The taper leg also continues the fashion industry's current love affair with '80s trends.  I remember some of my tapered jeans from back in the day had 4-inch zippers at the ankle, have you seen that incorporated in the new pant?

Diana: I've seen lots of skinny jeans like that around the mall. The zipper is a trend popping up on not only the bottom of your jeans, but designers are showing off tops with zipper accents all over the runways. I suppose if you are a big fan of zippers, get yourself a black, zipper accented tank, and spend all summer matching it with your favorite bottoms. So what do you think about these two trends; are you glad that the 80's are hanging around?

Samantha: I'm not too happy about the 80's comeback because I've been there, done that.  I see some 70's trends in some of the spring lines, like the dolman sleeves. Nice to have some different shapes, don't you think?

Diana: Yes, well, with the way old trends are making a comeback, I can guarantee you that the 70's are going to have a turn very soon.

Samantha: Gauchos, ponchos, cowl necks, overalls! The jumpsuit is making its mark even this year, so you are right. When you start to see patchwork jeans with giant bellbottoms, then you'll know it's time to relive the 70's!
